Food Safety & Compliance Statement
Independently inspected.
Continuously verified.
Laverde Artisan Ltd operates under United Kingdom food safety law. This statement describes the regulatory framework that governs how our products are imported, stored, labelled, and dispatched — and the independent verification that backs every claim we make.
1. Regulatory framework
We operate as a registered food business under the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the regulator for food safety in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Our premises are registered with the London Borough of Hackney, the local authority responsible for our environmental health inspections.
The standards we work to include the General Food Law (Regulation EC 178/2002, retained in UK law), the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013, the Food Information Regulations 2014, and the UK Allergen Information requirements (Natasha's Law, where applicable).
2. Independent inspection and Food Hygiene Rating
Our most recent inspection was conducted on 25 February 2026 by a food safety officer from the London Borough of Hackney. The inspection assessed three areas:
- Hygienic handling of food — preparation, storage, and temperature control
- Cleanliness and condition of facilities — layout, ventilation, hand washing, and pest control
- Management of food safety — documented systems, staff knowledge, and confidence that standards will be maintained
We were awarded the maximum rating of 5 (Very Good) under the UK Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. This rating is verifiable on the public FSA register at ratings.food.gov.uk.
3. Labelling compliance
Every product sold in the United Kingdom carries a label that has been reviewed and approved by our food safety inspector. Each label includes, as a minimum:
- Product denomination and net quantity
- Full ingredients list, with allergens declared in bold per Annex II of EU Regulation 1169/2011 (retained in UK law)
- Nutritional information per 100g or 100ml in the format required by UK law
- Best-before date and lot or batch number for full traceability
- Country of origin and identity of the producer
- Identity and address of the UK importer (Laverde Artisan Ltd, 71-75 Shelton Street, London WC2H 9JQ)
- Storage instructions, where relevant
- Barcode (EAN-13)
4. Allergen declaration and management
The fourteen statutory allergens defined under UK law are declared on every product label where present, in bold within the ingredients list. Our suppliers operate under their own allergen control programmes, audited locally, and we receive specifications for each lot.
Because our product range is narrow and our supply chain short, the risk of cross-contamination is structurally low. We do not handle peanuts, tree nuts, gluten, dairy, or eggs in our UK premises. Our Café Madrigal range is processed in a Colombian facility that handles other origins of coffee but no statutory allergens.
5. Traceability and lot control
Every unit we dispatch carries a lot number that links back to a single harvest, a single producer, and — for our olive oil — a single milling date. This enables withdrawal or recall within hours rather than days. We maintain dispatch records for every lot, including buyer, quantity, and destination, in line with the EC 178/2002 traceability principle.
6. Storage and handling standards
Olive oil and honey are non-perishable when stored correctly. We store all product in temperature- and light-controlled conditions: ambient 15–22°C, out of direct light, in food-grade containers. Glass packaging is verified for food contact and certified by our supplier. Honey is handled under cold-fill conditions to preserve its enzymatic profile.
7. Supplier standards
We source from a small number of producers, each verified directly. Every producer must hold the food safety certifications required in their country of origin and must provide, on request: certificate of analysis per lot, traceability documentation linking the lot to a specific harvest or batch, and confirmation of food contact packaging compliance. We do not source through brokers, distributors, or auction.
8. Insurance and accountability
Laverde Artisan Ltd maintains product liability and public liability insurance appropriate for a United Kingdom food importer of our scale. Certificates of insurance are made available to wholesale and trade buyers as part of standard onboarding documentation.
The director responsible for food safety compliance is Luis Laverde, Founder and Director, Laverde Artisan Ltd.
9. Incident and recall protocols
In the unlikely event of a quality incident, our protocol is:
- Immediate withdrawal of the affected lot from sale across all channels
- Notification to the London Borough of Hackney environmental health team within 24 hours
- Direct contact with every buyer of the affected lot using our dispatch records
- Public notice on this website if consumer-facing recall is required
- Post-incident review and disclosure to the FSA where appropriate
No product safety incidents have been recorded since trading began in November 2025.
