How fresh is this coffee when I receive it?

We roast Madrigal Colombian specialty coffee in small batches and ship within 2–7 days of roasting in most cases. Roast date is printed on the bag. Specialty coffee is at its best from day 7 to day 30 post-roast — fresher is not always better, since coffee needs a few days to de-gas after roasting. We send what is ready, not what has been sitting on a shelf.

How should I store the bag once opened?

Keep the bag sealed at room temperature, in a cool dark cupboard. Do not refrigerate — refrigeration causes moisture condensation that ruins the beans. The bag has a one-way valve that lets CO2 out without letting oxygen in. Once you open it, fold and clip the top tightly. For everyday use, aim to finish within 3–4 weeks of opening for peak flavour.

Will you grind the beans for me?

We sell Madrigal as whole beans only, by design. Pre-ground coffee loses up to half its aromatic compounds within 15 minutes of grinding. If you have an espresso machine, grinder, or moka pot at home, you will taste a significant difference grinding fresh. If you do not own a grinder, a quality blade grinder costs around £25 and pays for itself within a few bags.

What is the difference between this and supermarket Colombian coffee?

Madrigal is specialty grade, with a cupping score of 82+ on the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) scale. It is a washed, single-origin Colombian coffee from growers of the ASOCAFE TATAMÁ association in Santuario, Risaralda, with notes of lemon, brown sugar and almond, roasted weekly in small batches in London. Supermarket Colombian coffee is typically commodity-grade and blended, without traceability to a named origin.

Madrigal is roasted as a versatile specialty coffee, ideal for most manual brewers and modern espresso setups:

Filter: V60, Kalita, Chemex, AeroPress

Highlight the lemon acidity and brown sugar sweetness with a slightly longer ratio (e.g. 1:15–1:16).

Espresso:

For a sweeter shot with almond and milk chocolate notes, start around 1:2–1:2.2 brew ratio and adjust to taste.

French Press / Cafetière:

Coarser grind, 4 minutes steep, gentle plunge for a rounded, chocolatey cup.
